Operational Update | South Island Network and Ferry Cancellations

8 July 2026 | 5.30pm

As network disruptions continue across the South Island, we wanted to provide an update on the current situation and the impacts on freight movements.

State Highway 1 remains closed between Waipara and Ward following significant flooding across North Canterbury and Marlborough. A local state of emergency remains in place in the Kaikōura District.

Key impacts include:

  • Flooding, slips, debris and ongoing weather-related damage across the freight network.

  • The risk of further disruptions, restrictions and road closures as weather conditions continue.

  • Forecast snow, ice, and additional rainfall creating ongoing challenges for freight movements.

Cook Strait freight movements are also being impacted by deteriorating weather conditions, with strong winds and rough sea conditions affecting ferry services.

Confirmed ferry cancellations:

Thursday 9 July

  • Wellington to Picton – 8.15am

  • Picton to Wellington – 2.00pm

Given the scale and likely duration of this disruption, a Network Disruption Surcharge will continue to apply to freight travelling through the affected South Island corridor until normal routes are restored.

This surcharge applies only to the affected portion of the freight movement and reflects the additional costs associated with route diversions and extended transit times arising from this weather event.

We appreciate your understanding as we continue to prioritise the safe and reliable movement of your freight.
