Network Disruption | SH2 '19 Jan

State Highway 2 between Matawai and Waioweka remains closed in both directions due to extensive slips and surface flooding.
This closure is still in effect, with NZTA confirming that the damage is significant and the route is unsafe for crews to access.

A helicopter assessment has identified major over‑slips and under‑slips across multiple sites, confirming widespread instability along the corridor.

Further assessment and geotechnical investigations have identified up to 40 slips in total, including several large and complex slip sites. NZTA has advised that the closure will likely extend for several weeks due to the scale of the damage.

This closure follows heavy rainfall over the weekend, which triggered debris flows, surface flooding, and road washouts.

Our Operational teams are working hard to reroute movements and keep freight moving across our network. However significant delays are expected with major route disruptions. Please do not hesitate to contact our Account Manager directly with any further questions.

We will continue to provide updates as soon as they are released by NZTA.
