SH3 Awakino Gorge – Limited Convoy Access

Convoys begin 5.00pm Saturday 2 May

We have been advised by NZTA that State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge will reopen under escorted convoy access from 5.00 pm Saturday 2 May, following storm damage from severe weather last month.

While a single lane has been cleared, significant repair work is still underway. For the next three weeks (until Friday 22 May), access will be limited to scheduled convoys only.

  • Weekdays:

    • Road closed 6.30 am–5.00 pm for repairs

    • Night‑time convoys only: 5.00 pm–6.30 am. Single lane and one direction only per convoy, alternating.

  • Weekends:

    • Convoys operate at set times throughout the day and night

After this period, the road is expected to reopen 24/7 with stop/go traffic management.

The Gorge remains an active worksite and conditions may change at short notice, including full closures.

Our teams will be actively managing the situation throughout this time frame and will continue to provide updates if and when the situation changes.
